"The body does remember."
Body-Centered Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the connection between body and mind. It explores how emotions, trauma, and psychological challenges manifest in the body and how these physical experiences can serve as a gateway to healing.
This therapy can take various forms, including somatic experiencing, bioenergetics, and targeted breathing techniques. The therapist guides the client in exploring physical sensations and helps them understand how these are connected to emotions and psychological processes. By bringing attention to the body, tension and stress can be reduced, body awareness increased, and emotional well-being improved.
Body-centered therapy is effective for a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain, and addiction. Its goal is to help clients recognize bodily sensations and use them as a guide for regulating emotions, understanding thought patterns, and promoting deep healing.
As Bessel van der Kolk emphasizes in The Body Keeps the Score, our bodies carry the imprint of trauma, and by consciously engaging the body in the healing process, we can relearn how to feel, connect, and recover.
